BROTHER’S LIFE-SAVING LIVER DONATION GIVES SISTER A NEW LEASE ON LIFE AT FORTIS MULUND THIS RAKSHA BANDHAN

Brother donates part of his Liver to save younger sister from advanced Wilson’s Disease, giving her a new lease on life; sibling discharged to return home ahead of Raksha Bandhan

Mumbai/Gujarat, August 9, 2025: In a touching gesture of brotherly love, Anas, a 32-year-old man from Palanpur, Gujarat, donated a part of his liver to save the life of his 27-year-old sister, Humera, suffering from advanced Wilson’s Disease. This Raksha Bandhan meant more and held special importance for the family as the life-saving transplant was carried out successfully on July 9, 2025 at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Wilson´s Disease is a rare genetic condition that, if untreated, can lead to progressive Liver failure, neurological problems, and even death. Unfortunately for Humera, by the time she was diagnosed, the disease was already in a stage of Jaundice and Cirrhosis and she required a Liver transplant. Dr Vikram Raut, Director & Chief Surgeon – Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mulund along with his team successfully completed the complex surgery that resulted in a win-win situation for both – recipient and donor.

When their older brother Owais was diagnosed with Wilson Disease in 2017, the family experienced its first crisis. Following his diagnosis, medical professionals recommended that all of his siblings undergo screening as well. The youngest, Humera, also tested positive. She started her course of medication in 2018, but over time, her health deteriorated. The decision to seek help, leading to a lifesaving liver transplant, was the culmination of a journey that started as a family’s shared illness and evolved into a tale of bravery, sacrifice, and hope.

Humera had developed advanced Liver Cirrhosis by the beginning of 2025, with complications such as internal bleeding, jaundice and swelling in the abdomen. Consultation with Dr Vikram Raut at the Fortis’ Ahmedabad OPD highlighted the need for a transplant. The family decided to have the procedure done at Fortis Hospital Mulund, where Anas received a thorough evaluation and was deemed a perfect match. He readily consented to donate a part of his liver to his sister.

For Anas, the decision was instinctive. “She’s my sister, and I didn’t have to think twice about saving her,” he said. Before the surgery, he felt no fear, only a steadfast resolve to aid her recovery. His family and friends stood firmly behind him, proud of his willingness to step forward. “I was already ready,” he added, explaining that from the moment doctors confirmed he was a match, he never hesitated.

Elaborating on the case, Dr Vikram Raut, Director & Chief Surgeon – Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mulund, said, “Despite beginning chelation treatment in 2018, Humera’s condition worsened, and the only option available was liver transplantation. We used the left lobe of her brother’s liver for the transplant”.

With both siblings now on the road to recovery, this Raksha Bandhan is extra special—marked by gratitude for health, family, and the care that made it all possible, as Anas prepares to return to his garment store and Humera looks ahead to a healthy life with her husband.

Dr Vishal Beri, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Mulund, said, “It’s heartening to see young patients like Humera get a second chance. Organ failure at such a young age is devastating, but with timely diagnosis and the right care, recovery is possible. Kudos to our clinical and support teams, none of this would have been possible without their dedication and zeal. They don’t just treat illnesses, they help people reclaim their lives.”
