“R.D. Burman Always Reinvented His Own Music: Asha Bhosle”

Veteran singer Asha Bhosle fondly recalled her late husband and legendary composer R.D. Burman as a visionary artist who constantly pushed musical boundaries and encouraged her to reinvent her singing style. Burman, who would have celebrated his 86th birthday this Friday, remains one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic music composers, known for timeless hits like Mehbooba Mehbooba, Gulabi Aankhen, and Mera Kuchh Samaan.

Speaking about their relationship—both personal and professional—Bhosle said, “Music was his true passion, and he never stopped innovating. He would often urge me to try something new, whether it was altering my vocal tone or approaching a song differently. His guidance was a huge source of inspiration for me, and I learned a great deal from him.”

The legendary singer, now 91, married Burman in 1980. Though the couple eventually separated, they continued to share mutual admiration and respect. Reflecting on their extensive body of work together, Bhosle said, “I had known him for many years and worked with him on countless songs. I believe I recorded over 840 tracks with him, including memorable numbers like Yeh Vaada Raha, Jaane Jaan O Meri Jaane Jaan, and Katra Katra.”

R.D. Burman passed away in 1994 at the age of 54 due to a heart attack, but his legacy endures through the melodies that continue to inspire generations.
